Sema Institute of Yoga – Tjef Sema Paut Neteru “Egyptian Yoga” Exercise Precautions For Health Conditions, Children & Pregnancy:
If you have any health issue, you are advised to check with your health care practitioner before engaging in these practices. Sema is not liable for any injuries. These are the general precautions for the postures. Precautions mean that the postures are not recommended to be performed if one has those medical or health issues mentioned; during those postures, one can just relax and practice breathing deeply, or one can even visualize oneself in the posture, to get the subtle Life Force Energy cleansing benefits. Remember, there should be NO STRAINING performing any of the postures, to the point that one is more caught up in holding the posture than in being able to relax in the posture and breathe deeply into the posture or focus on the guided reflections. Remember the perfect posture in Tjef Neteru yoga is defined as each person performing the posture to the best of their capacity. If you feel pain or discomfort when performing any of the postures, STOP! Follow up with your health care practitioner or/and a chiropractor.
- FOR PREGNANCY GENERAL:
The two major guidelines for pregnancy and the postures:
1) Do not lay on stomach (and caution in backward bends that in effect tighten the stomach area.)
2) Separate legs in forward bends - FOR HEALTH CONDITIONS GENERAL:
1) Inverted Poses In General: Headstand, Shoulder stand Pose which precedes the Geb Pose, And Geb Plough Pose, and Nut Forward Bend when done as an inverted V pose.
Precautions =
• High Blood Pressure, Glaucoma, Heart or Respiratory Conditions (ie. asthma, etc.), Diabetes (usually have a secondary heart condition)
• Also, neck problems, back problems, shoulder problems
Note: Alternate to Nut Inverted V Pose: Instead of going into the inverted V, just Keep your Back Flat and Head in at the level of the body/shoulders (forward)
Pregnancy = Only if you have been performing it all along—and as advised by your health care practitioner/doctor—some sources say only first trimester
2) Geb Spinal Twist Precautions =
• Back/Spinal Issues
3) Fish Pose And Wheel Pose Precautions =
High Blood Pressure or Respiratory Conditions (e.g., asthma, etc.)
Issues with fragile blood vessels in the neck or head
Neck problems, Back/Spine problems
Pregnancy=First Trimester and/or as advised by your health care practitioner/doctor
4) Forward Bend – Precautions =
• Lower Back problems – Don’t Overstretch
Pregnancy = OK to perform…with legs separated to accommodate abdomen as needed
4) Backward Bending Postures: Selket Scorpion Posture & Cobra Serpent Posture Precautions =
• Back problems
Pregnancy = NO …..may substitute by laying on side and doing individual leg lifts (right side, then left side)
8) Sebek/Sobek (Crocodile) Pose & Aset Pose & Maat Pose & Khepri Pose Precautions =
• Hip problems, Knee problems, ankle problems
Pregnancy = OK…as long as can keep balance and no laying on stomach before engaging the posture…make necessary adjustments for ease
Neck problems, Back/Spine problems
Pregnancy=First Trimester and/or as advised by your health care practitioner/doctor
C. Children:
1) General Health Conditions Precautions (above) Also Apply
2) Headstand: Not Advised: It is advised that children not perform the Headstand poses for several reasons. Their bodies are young, and their bones and connective tissues are not mature. Their bones are soft, and easily susceptible to deforming or breaking, and the connective tissues are not strong enough to give support.
3) Wheel Pose: Perform with Caution: If children are new to TSPN postures, or Yoga Exercise in general, this posture should be approached with caution the first time they perform the posture, and throughout the program. This is because children can have vertebral spinal luxations from previous exercise activities, poor posture, birth defects, and even from the process of childbirth itself, and not really be aware of it, except as little aches and pains which they have become accustomed to or that the parents overlook. These can become exacerbated in extreme backward bending postures, like the Wheel Pose.
4) Geb Spinal Twist: Perform with Caution: If children are new to TSPN postures, or Yoga Exercise in general, this posture should be approached with caution the first time they perform the posture, and throughout the program. If there are pre- existing conditions such as spinal luxations in the lumbar (back) vertebrae especially, this position may exacerbate them.
